Lew Wallace and Billy the Kid are shown together in this original pen and ink drawing by Brent, which was commissioned by artist/author Ray John de Aragon. These historic persons, Lew Wallace and Billy the Kid, are in the news once again as New Mexico Governor Richardson contemplates a possible pardon for outlaw Billy. Territorial Governor Lew Wallace once met with an armed Billy the Kid, in private, in an attempt to resolve matters associated with the Lincoln County War. Here is a link to a recent news story regarding this new possible pardon:

Brent admires Lew Wallace, who was a true renaissance man, and who completed one of the most famous novels of the 19th century, "Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ", while working in Santa Fe as Territorial Governor of the New Mexico Territory. Lew Wallace's work of 1880 inspired, it is said, Henryk Sienkiewicz, the brilliant Polish author of "Quo Vadis' (Brent's favorite novel), written in 1895. Lew Wallace's novel has inspired film directors, composers, artists and many others.
